Board of Supervisors Approves Appointments to Local and Regional Committees
The Botetourt County Board of Supervisors approved several appointments and reappointments to local and regional committees during its August 25 meeting.
Economic Development Authority
The Board appointed Candace Monaghan and Matt Weaver to the Botetourt County Economic Development Authority (EDA).
Monaghan will complete the term of longtime EDA member and vice-chair John Griffin, who passed away. Her term expires November 1, 2027.
A Buchanan District resident, Monaghan comes from a family that has farmed in Botetourt County for more than 100 years. She is the founder of the Beaver Dam Farm Sunflower Festival, which attracts approximately 20,000 visitors each year and has become one of Botetourt’s premier attractions. She also operates a small business involving photography, fine art, custom jewelry and other creative ventures.
Her experience in agriculture, tourism, entrepreneurship and small business will bring additional perspective to the EDA’s work.
Weaver was appointed to complete the term of Jeff Emry, who resigned following his decision to retire. Weaver’s term expires November 1, 2028.
Originally from Marion, Weaver has lived in the Fincastle District for the past six years. He brings more than 10 years of experience with the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development, including expertise in federal and state grants, redevelopment and rural economic development.
Greenway Committee
The Board also reappointed three community representatives to the Roanoke Valley Greenways Committee:
- Mandy Adkins — term ending June 30, 2027
- Warren Clark — term ending June 30, 2029
- Tim Miller — term ending June 30, 2027
The committee works through the Roanoke Valley–Alleghany Regional Commission to promote coordinated planning, development and maintenance of a connected regional greenway system. Its work supports recreation, transportation connections, environmental protection, public health and regional cooperation on trail projects.
Planning Commission
Shannon Turner was appointed to the Botetourt County Planning Commission to complete the term of longtime member Sam Foster from the Blue Ridge District, who resigned.
Turner’s term expires January 1, 2027. The Planning Commission serves in an advisory capacity to the Board of Supervisors and helps guide the orderly development of Botetourt County and its surrounding areas.
Roanoke Valley Transportation Planning Organization
The Board reappointed Matthew Lindsay and Jonathan McCoy to the Transportation Technical Committee of the Roanoke Valley Transportation Planning Organization. Their terms expire June 30, 2029.
The Transportation Technical Committee provides professional and technical guidance on regional transportation issues, including transportation studies, traffic needs, funding priorities and long-range multimodal planning.
Their continued service helps ensure Botetourt County’s transportation needs and priorities are represented in regional planning and recommendations.
Western Virginia EMS Council
The Board also appointed Jonathan Rodgers, Assistant Chief of EMS, Health and Safety, to the Western Virginia EMS Council.
Rodgers fills a vacancy created by the departure of Jason Ferguson.
The Western Virginia EMS Council provides regional coordination and support for emergency medical services, including training, planning, medical direction, disaster preparedness and system improvement.
These appointments continue Botetourt County’s participation in organizations that help shape important local and regional priorities, while bringing new experience and perspectives to several boards and committees.
